ALDACTONE INTRODUCTION

Aldactone (spironolactone) is an effective over-the-counter (OTC), oral diuretic most often indicated in the management of primary hyperaldosteronism - a condition in which the adrenal gland releases too much aldosterone (an electrolyte regulating hormone), edematous conditions, congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver accompanied by edema and/or ascites, nephrotic syndrome, and essential hypertension. Aldactone was developed in the late 1950’s, but first became a widespread during the early 1960’s as a clinical medication.

Often used by competitive athletes and bodybuilders for very specific short-term reductions in water weight, Aldactone is readily by weight class competitors in order to make their required class weigh-ins. Aldactone can also be effectively administered to rapidly shed subcutaneous fluid for enhanced definition sought by bodybuilders.

ALDACTONE FUNCTIONS & TRAITS

Structurally speaking, Aldactone is combination of four elements as seen in its chemical formula C24H32O4S, and actually falls into two medicinal categories diuretics and aldosterone antagonists. This rapidly and extensively metabolized compound follows a complex metabolic pathway that can be divided into two main routes: those in which the sulfur moiety is retained; and those in which the sulfur moiety is removed by dethioacetylation. Aldactone is transformed into a reactive metabolite that can deactivate adrenal and testicular cytochrome P450 enzymes, which produce a moderate anti-androgenic action.

Primarily distributed (within the United States) by G.D. Searle LLC, a division of the New York based Pfizer Inc., Aldactone is a fairly unique diuretic that works on various levels to aid in the therapy of excess fluid-related conditions. Unlike many such agents, which indiscriminately increase the excretion of water, and electrolytes from the body, Aldactone’s involvement in the sodium-potassium exchange is more deliberate. Its unusual capacity for retaining potassium, and thereby reducing the risk of muscular cramping.

More specifically, by virtue of its ability to antagonize the effects of aldosterone, Aldactone inhibits the exchange of sodium for potassium in the distal renal tubule further helping prevent potassium loss. For this reason, it is often referred to as “potassium sparing” diuretic. Since Aldactone competes with aldosterone for receptor sites, Aldactone counteracts secondary aldosteronism induced by volume depletion and associated sodium loss. It’s also highly efficient in lowering systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

EFFECTS OF ALDACTONE

Aldactone’s very discriminating excretion of water and electrolytes from, also deliberately controls the sodium-potassium exchange. Its unusual capacity for retaining potassium, and thereby reducing the risk of muscular cramping, makes Aldactone particularly beneficial to pre-contest bodybuilders. Consequently, Aldactone’s actions work together to implicitly benefit athletes, bodybuilder’s, and recreational gym enthusiasts in the safe and effective reduction of internal fluids to reveal greater muscular definition and separation for contests, events, and other presentation-oriented activities.

The other primary athlete application for Aldactone is that of rapid weight loss. Many athletes such as boxers, wrestlers, MMA competitors, etc., participate in very specific weight classes, and administer products like Aldactone to quickly shed excess fluid weight prior to weigh-ins. Generally after meeting the weight requirements (i.e. ‘making weight’) such athletes rapidly rehydrate to their normal weight prior to the actual competition.

ALDACTONE ADMINISTRATION

Although Aldactone dosing varies based on the treated condition, general (both male and female) administration ranges from 25-100 mg daily, and is best administered in two separate doses spaced at least 8 hours apart. Another practice by male athletes is taking 100 mg in the morning as a single daily dose. Regardless of the method, Aldactone works best over time and is typically for 3 to 5 days prior to the athletes needs be they water weight loss, or greater definition.

The effects of Aldactone on female users, especially those taking anabolics, are particularly beneficial with regard to its anti-androgenic properties. Since Aldactone literally reduces androgen levels, women can stave off the androgenic side effects sometimes experienced during the use of more potent anabolics, or during Anabolic cycles in which greater dosages of steroids are being used.

Commonly viewed as a rather mild prescription diuretic, Aldactone is and can be administered with Lasix (Furosemide) for a stronger synergistic total diuretic effect. This duo is most often administered in a 50 mg/50 mg combination where in Lasix overall strength is joined to Aldactone special potassium-sparing properties to firstly create a more potent compound, and to secondly prevent the sometimes excessive cramping that occurs in diuretic use due to the loss of primary electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium).

SIDE EFFECTS OF ALDACTONE

The side effects of Aldactone may consist of variety of adverse reactions including: skin irritations; maculopapular or erythematous rash; lethargy; menstrual irregularities; nausea; vomiting; gynecomastia; mental confusion; loss of muscle coordination; diarrhea; impotence; headache; cramping; drowsiness; and fever. Other side effects of Aldactone include tumors in rats, the possibility of breast cancer promotion, and the capacity to be both a weak testosterone biosynthesis and androgen receptor binding inhibitor.

AVAILABILITY OF ALDACTONE

Aldactone is typically found in the form of a round, light yellow, film-coated tablet with 'SEARLE 1001' on one side, and 'Aldactone' along with the dosage on the other side. Aldactone is dosed at 25, 50, and 100 mg of the aldosterone antagonist Spironolactone, and is not known to be counterfeited.

Aldactone is an OTC product that is also readily purchased online at a variety of related drug store, pharmacy, and steroid websites. One reliable internet source for such products is steroids.com, where its advertisers market a variety of Anabolic compounds and ancillary products including diuretics that possess similar actions and potency as Aldactone.

ALDACTONE REVIEW

Recognized as one of the stronger diuretics available, Aldactone has gained quite a following among competitive athletes and recreational users alike. This highly effective and selective (potassium-sparing) diuretic is far less hazardous than its long list of manufacturer cited side effects implies. Virtually no adverse effects are actually realized by Aldactone users at recommended dosages, which makes it a great cutting cycle ingredient, and muscle separation maximizing product.
